10 most underrated superfoods

For food to be considered a superfood nowadays it needs two things. Firstly to be slightly overpriced, and secondly to have a fancy name you're not too sure how to pronounce (Acai, goji, chia, quinoa and kamut step right up!). Thankfully, you don’t have to be too cool for school to benefit from these old nutritional favourites. These classic superfoods should never be forgotten.

1. Sardines

Canned sardines are an economical package of omega 3 fatty acids, protein and calcium. Learn to love these little guys on wholemeal toast for breakfast or a light dinner. Choose sardines in spring water or olive oil.

2. Eggs

The perfect food, and what fabulous packaging? Gram for gram, eggs provide the most bio-available protein. The yolk contains vitamin D, A, B12 and several B vitamins. Choose eggs laid by happy organic and free range birds.

3. Vitamin C

The original supplement, vitamin C has not lost any of its healing charms. Necessary for skin repair, wound healing, and boosting the immune system. Choose buffered varieties such as sodium or potassium ascorbate.

4. Beans

Drag out those cans of cannellini beans, kidney beans and lentils. Legumes provide soluble fibre, protein, and are low in kilojoules and glycaemic load. Rinse beans with water before using in cooking or salads.

5. Molasses

Molasses is the throwaway product from sugar processing. Shame, because this is where all the nutritional goodies are found, including calcium, iron, magnesium, manganese and selenium. Molasses makes your hair shiny and nails strong. When buying make sure to choose organic molasses.

6. Evening Primrose Oil

You don’t hear much about this oil since fish oil grabbed the headlines. However, EPO is fabulous for reducing breast tenderness and irritability before periods, also very good for relieving eczema.

7. Garlic

Your desert island medicine. Garlic fights against infection – viral, bacterial and fungal. It also helps thin and clear mucus from nose, sinuses and lungs and is preventative against heart disease.

8. Honey

Honey has antibiotic properties and soothes the membranes of throat and lungs, making a hot honey and lemon drink a great remedy for a nasty cough. Choose darker honey, preferably sourced from the beekeeper him or herself.

9. Spirulina

Spirulina was possibly the first superfood. This very alkalising supplement was contains an assortment of micronutrients including zeaxanthin, betacarotene and chromium.

10. Ginger

This hot spice not only adds a kick to your curry, it helps quell nausea whether from motion sickness to morning sickness, reduce inflammation and improve circulation to cold fingers and toes.
