Ten steps to glowing skin

Glowing skin isn't just about what you put on it. Staying healthy, fit, following a balanced diet, and incorporating wellness strategies ensures lit-from-within skin in no time. Here beauty expert Shonagh Walker shares how to glow from top to toe in ten steps.

1. Look into lymphatic support

Your lymphatic system won't move unless you do. Give it a boost with exercise that assists it, like Hypoxi. Throughout a 30-minute session you cycle in a horizontal position in a vacuum-sealed chamber. While you cycle, the vacuum interchanges negative and positive pressure, which stimulates lymphatic drainage and blood supply to the stomach, hips, buttock and thighs. Cellulite and fat are reduced and your skin is left smoother and more glowing.

2. Try a retreat

Last year, I tried a yoga and meditation retreat. One week of gentle exercise, meditation and vegan food and my skin glowed. Locally, try Yoga Health Retreats in Byron bay, or if you can afford the time and airfare, try One Life Retreats in Bali. Or, set up your own home.

3. Move more

Find ways to be as active as possible, says Chiva Som's holistic health expert, Dr. Kampol. "Staying active doesn't always mean dedicating hours at the gym. Take the stairs, walk the dog, play with children and enjoy sports with friends."

4. Suit up

You've heard of Chinese Cupping for boosting positive Chi and lymphatic drainage? The HDC Suit emulates it, but offers all-over, synchronised cupping. It has 400 integrated pressure chambers positioned specifically around the stomach, back, buttocks, legs and thigh region. They intermittently apply a gentle suction and then soft compression on the dermal tissue, to activate circulation and encourage the lymphatic drainage and toxin removal. Think less bloating and truly radiant skin.

5. Avoid alcohol

A glass of wine or two every other day, is fine, excessive alcohol can cause your systems to become sluggish, dehydrate the skin and even make it appear yellow. Always drink two glasses of water for each alcoholic drink, and have many alcohol-free days.

6. Go green

In her book, The Beauty Detox Solution, nutritionist Kimberly Snyder hails the vegetable smoothie for glowing skin. "It is essential for youthful, great skin," she says. "Include in your diet as well, things like avocados, which help moisturise, and cabbage for clear, blemish-free skin. Figs and radishes are great blood purifiers - great for glowing skin. I am a huge advocate of probiotic-rich foods, such as raw sauerkraut and kimchi. They balance the friendly flora, which keeps toxins in check and results in gorgeous skin."

7. Apply a mask

A weekly mask will address any skin issues you may have and leave your skin glowing. Check out my video blog to find a mask suited to you.

8. Drink water

Obvious, but I can't stress it enough. Two to three litres daily will flush out toxins and keep skin clear. "Try to include boiled water to clear your complexion, in the form of caffeine-free, natural herbal teas," suggests Dr. Kampol.

9. Sleep

Aim for eight hours or more each night so your skin can effectively complete all of its rest and repair processes.

10.  Enjoy antioxidants

Your skin comes under fire from many environmental aggressors – pollution, cigarette smoke, radiation from your computer, microwave, TV. Eating plenty of antioxidant-rich foods will help combat that. Be sure to have at least three different coloured vegetables on your plate with each meal.
