How to freshen up for spring in 10 simple steps.
The 10 steps to getting yourself ready – and gorgeous – for spring.
1. Scrub all over
There’s no better way to remove those dead, dry, dull skin cells to get limbs ready for spring. Look for a body scrub that is both gritty and creamy in formulation; try The Body Shop Shea Body Scrub.
For best effect, exfoliate skin before you step into the shower – this way you’ll be able to really work the product in to dry skin – and concentrate on extra-dry patches, such as knees and elbows. For even better results, start by dry-body brushing, a ritual that not only stimulates a sluggish system, but also lightly sloughs skin. Try: The Body Shop Cactus Brush.
2. Shave with oil
Foams may be easy to use, and creams luxurious in feel, but oils give the best, closest-shave result, leaving legs looking silky and lustrous. Simply make your cleansing oil work double-duty as a shaving aid; try Bloom Organics Gentle Cleansing Oil.
3. Slather on scent
Spring dresses call for smooth, supple skin from head to toe, as well as a super-pretty perfume. Tick both beauty boxes with one new-season must-have: a fragranced cream. Try the eternally gorgeous Michael Kors body lotion.
4. Hydrate your hair
Chances are winter’s clash of cold winds and indoor heating has left your hair parched and dull.
The remedy: an ultra-conditioning treatment. Apply in place of your regular conditioner every few days, until hair is restored to a healthy state; then use on a weekly basis. One to try: Redken All Soft Heavy Cream.
5. Deep-clean your skin
Just as you call in the spring-cleaners to scrub out those dusty, mucky nooks and crannies in your house, so too can your end-of-winter skin benefit from an extra-intensive clean. If budget permits, book in for a deep-cleansing facial; if not, take some time out to gently scrub your face, and then treat it to a purifying mud mask, both of which will work to draw out impurities in pores. Try: Biore Pore Unclogging Scrub, and Refine Self Heating Mask.
6. Commit to sunscreen
So you got a little lazy with sunscreen over winter. It happens. But there’s no excuse in spring, when ultraviolet levels – and sunburn risk – start to soar. Get into the habit of applying a high-factor, broad-spectrum sunscreen daily.
7. Try a face tanner
The easiest way to wipe winter from your face? Slather on some self-tanner. Facial tan formulations are increasingly complexion-friendly – being packed with moisturising properties – plus they give great glow, rather than an obviously tell-tale tan. Case in point: the new St Tropez Naturals Radiance Self Tan for Face. Extra tip: if you want to wake up with only the subtlest of sun-kissed shades, mix one-part tanner, one-part night cream.
8. Layer your blush
Second to fake tan, blush is an effective way to quickly fuse healthy colour into your face. For best impact, try this makeup artist-adored technique for stay-put power: first, blend a creamy cheek colour into your apples; next, follow up with a dusting of powder blush in a complementary shade. Check out Bobbi Brown (bobbibrown.com.au) for some of the prettiest cheek tints, rouges and powders around.
9. Buy a new mascara
You need to replace mascara every three months anyway; what’s more, tired and winter-weary eyes will benefit from the season’s great new eye-openers (literally: little visually wakes up eyes like a lash-lifting mascara). Our pick: Almay One Coat Get Up and Grow Mascara, which is formulated to both lengthen lashes temporarily, and strengthen them over time.
10. Paint your nails
Grey, greige and beige nail polish felt right when matched back to winter’s sombre weather, but a new form of colour therapy is needed to get us into a more upbeat, spring-ready mood. The ideal shade: a perky, pretty rose-pink.
