4 ways to radiant skin

Getting great skin in summer doesn't have to be hard. These 4 tricks will help you get glowing in no time.

Scrub to boost circulation

Holly Davis, co-founder of Iku Wholefoods, recommends exfoliating with a homemade scrub or dry body-brushing. “Both are known to increase circulation and leave skin glowing,” she says. “To make a ginger scrub, steep a muslin bag of grated ginger in very hot but not boiling water. Once it’s cooled enough to use, dip in a rough cloth and use it to scrub all over. To dry-exfoliate, take a sisal brush [a stiff-bristled brush of sisal plant fibres] or rough cloth and brush your skin.”

Drink up and drink right

What you drink is the key to happy skin. Dehydrated skin can look lined and tired, while too much of the wrong kind can have the same effect – alcohol can pickle, but it’s no skin preserver. The Institute of Medicine in the US recommends women drink about 2.2 litres of water a day (about nine cups), which can include herbal, caffeine-free teas.

Time your moisturise boost

Dermatologists agree that the best time to give thirsty skin a drink is after a bath or shower. Humectants in moisturisers draw and hold water in the skin, helping to seal in the fluid. After cleansing your face in the evening, dampen a flannel with warm water and lie with it on your face for a few minutes. This will open the pores and help those thirst-quenching night creams and serums work their magic.

Nourish from the inside

Eating a healthy, balanced diet that’s rich in fresh fruit and vegetables is a great start, however there are particular nutrients that have been found to improve skin. Selenium, a powerful antioxidant that’s found in Brazil nuts, eggs, cereal grains and fish, is known to protect against symptoms of sun damage such as age spots.
